Late one night during the fall of 2004, my wife and I decided to take a midnight drive through the countryside. It was something both of us enjoyed especially on restless nights. I knew this old country road that I had traveled many times in the daylight but very few times at night. So I decided to take road.
On both sides were fields and no houses for miles. About four miles down this road we saw what looked like a man with a lantern walking down the road the same direction as us. As we slowly passed him my wife and I looked at him noticing that he was a tall black man wearing worn out cover-alls and no shoes. Looking into the rear view mirror, to make sure that we had passed him okay, I noticed that there was no more light from the lantern and no one walking down the road.
As quickly as I could turn around, we headed back to see if we once again could see him. We could not. So I stopped the car to where it would shine the head lights off into a field to see if the man had gone into it - he hadn't. I turned the car around so it would shine into the other field across the road - still nothing. Grabbing flashlights that we always keep in the car, my wife and I walked up and down that stretch of road about a hundred yards each way thinking maybe he may be hiding in the ditch - nothing.
So, we decided it was time to go getting back into the car and the car would not start. Suddenly, my wife screamed and pointed out the window. Standing in front of us was the man with the lantern. He looked into the car then walked off - the light of the lantern fading out and the old black man disappeared.
Adding a little to the story, on this night, the moon was high in the sky and very bright. After the man faded into the night, the car started right up we knew it was time to go.
